Thank You! We just turned Seven Years Old!

Thank you, thank you!  There is no RiverRun without you.  We should be experienced enough by now to feel like old hands, but the publishing world keeps shifting under our feet.  No matter how well we do our job, there are parts of this industry over which we have no control.  For some reason, they wont listen to me when I tell them how to run their businesses.

Kindle, Borders, and Beyond

Am I crazy for sticking with books?  Things are looking bad for the superstore chain Borders, and Amazon is hoping that its new Kindle will have everyone reading electronic books.  Yet here I am still selling good old paper-based books.  It's not that I don't think new formats are great-- if they encourage more people to read I'm all for it-- it's just that I really like spending all day touching, displaying, and recommending books.  This blog stuff is fun and all, but it's not as much fun as covering a table with brand new books.  I'm going to keep doing this as long as it's economically viable to do so.  That of course, depends on you.

Twenty Twenty

Of course, being old school doesn't mean we never change or adapt.  We're constantly trying new things to make the store and our community here in Portsmouth more interesting.  I'm please to say that we are bringing a new twist to our Staff Pick selections in the store by introducing the Twenty/Twenty Table.  Each month we'll highlight twenty books that we think are great, and we'll give you twenty percent off on those titles during that month (sorry, in-store only).  People often ask us why we don't have a bestseller section, and the answer is we're not generally interested in those books.  We hope this will be a way to encourage you to try something different next time you're in the store.
