It's true, thanks to Michael Lewis, I can now tell you what a Credit Default Swap is. The only problem is, I get so angry talking about this topic that it's really best if you just ask me about my favorite novels instead. The fact that Wall Street is back to business as usual while we here on Congress Street are still feeling the effects of the financial crisis makes me crazy.
The Big Short just hit number one on the New York Times bestseller list, and we are excited to be co-hosting Michael Lewis at The Music Hall on April 7th as part of the Writers On A New England Stage series.
There have been dozens of books on the financial crisis, and I wondered why we needed another, but if you're going to spend an hour with an author holding open books while they sign them, it's good manners to have read at least one of their books. In that spirit I started The Big Short, and soon found myself reading passages out loud to my wife. Lewis tells the stories of a few quirky, intriguing individuals who saw early on that the sub-prime mortgage industry was unstable, and he follows their struggle to get someone, anyone to listen to them.
Those of you who know me know that I read almost exclusively novels-literary fiction and mystery. And I'm here to tell you that The Big Short fits in with those genres just fine. Join us for a great event, or if you can't make it to the show you can still pre-order a signed copy of the book. If you buy a book voucher from us or The Music Hall before April 7th, you'll get ten percent off the cover price of the book!
Tickets to Michael Lewis at The Music Hall are still available. Call the box office at 603-436-2400.
We are your friendly neighborhood bookstore, located in downtown Portsmouth, NH. Small but potent, we offer a fine selection of new books with an emphasis on fiction, history, poetry and mystery. We also have a great little kids section, and hold over 100 events a year.
