The Best of It by Kay ryan
Pulitzer Praise

How many words
does it take to praise
The Best of It?
Divide the page
in thirds: use only
the left of it.  Ladder
it with rhyme twined
time and again,
with sinewy sense
condensed
to a column of
implication--meant,
of course, to resemble
what she does
so deftly.  Be frugal--
imitation requires
the Ryan touch,
so few words used
to say so much.

Townie by Andre Dubus
Pre-order a Signed Copy

Our first event at the new Music Hall space is a roaring success!  Andre Dubus wowed the crowd, then stayed to chat with each and every person that wanted their book signed.  He was truly inspiring and a heap of fun at the same time.  Don't miss our next Loft event with Jennifer Egan.

Yikes! There's a lot going on for the dead of winter!  In February we combined our two stores, RiverRun and SecondRun.  Now when you come to 20 Congress St you will find a mix of new titles and nearly new used titles all in one place.  Yes, we still want your books!  Bring them in any day of the week between 9am and 6pm and trade them in.

Also, Michele's last day was March 31st.  Those of you who know her realize what a loss this is.  Over the past few years Michele has helped us build an events program that can stand toe to toe with any bookstore in America-- right here in little old Portsmouth.  She was also a great reader and recommender of books, so that is another whole to fill.

So it's been just about a month since we revamped/reopened....what do y'all think?

The feedback we've been getting has so far been positive, but if you haven't weighed in, we'd love to hear from you!

Personally, I'm relieved it is going well. It was very hard to leave SecondRun, as it had become a very special place to me on many levels.

But now I have the best of both worlds, I get to work with not just ONE other fabulous employee, but FIVE more!!!!  And the fact that I'm trundling home bundles of books EVERY night is completely reasonable, seeing as it's imperative that I be a well-informed, well-read bookseller of not just the older books... and spring is going to spring soon, so I won't need oil much longer....

Anyway... hope you all will be dropping by soon and regularly... new/used books are arriving daily!

Great Philosophers Who Failed At Love by Andrew Shaffer
Pre-order a Signed Copy

It's almost time for that stupid holiday again - Valentine's Day. In the past, I have always thought it was silly that a specific day was designated to show someone that you love them. Love is mushy - I think all the best books are the ones where people get their hearts stomped on, not where they happily ride off into the sunset.

This year, well, all I can say is "le sigh." Yep, how the mighty have fallen. HOWEVER, even with my new conversion to the Cult of Cupid, I am still going to come to RiverRun on Valentine's Day, to learn about really smart people who did poorly in the romance department. Our good friend Andrew Shaffer will be here to talk about his new book, Great Philosophers Who Failed at Love.
